Our History

•             In July 1961, Matthew Vincent Molanplay, president of the then- active American Relief Society, donated land to the Society for gravesites, which is today part of the “Cementerio La Villa de Guadalupe” in Zone 14.

•             On September 3, 1990, the US Embassy donated to the Society a parcel of land for charitable burials for American citizens from the City’s main cemetery in Zone 3. Today, the ASG pays the taxes on both properties and maintains their grounds.

 Current Charities:

•             Casa Maria in San Felipe de Jesus in Antigua benefits from ASG support. It is a home for older adults, many of whom have been forsaken by their families and who otherwise have no means of support. There are approximately 65 residents in the home.

•            Hogar Marina Guirola Leal is an orphanage in Zone 2 with approximately 23 residents ranging in age from 8 years to 35 years old. Many of these children have cognitive disabilities.

•            In 1966 the American Society  of Guatemala started a program to build a clinic in El MILAGRO. This ongoing project (2024) has been led by Vitalino Cuca and now his sons Herber and Moises.
Bill Luce, the developer of low cost housing started El MILAGRO and sold  the property where the Clinic started for $1.00 to the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF GUATEMALA. Then during the time that Tom Stroock (1989-1992) was US Ambassador and Sue Patterson was Consul  General,  the property was given to the community.
This community has taken our contribution and done something wonderful with it.
We have given people a chance to better themselves and have given them hope.
